Scheid Vineyards New Releases

The Scheid family has farmed a massive tract of land in the central coast of California since the 1970's - in Monterey County to be a bit more exact. Historically, the family has sold a lot of grapes to wineries, but lately they are clearly interested in making their own wines and developing their own brand, which is a perfectly sensible business tangent for all kinds of reasons, economic and otherwise... Here are some looks at recent releases:

Scheid 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Monterey ($20) sweet pea, melon, grass, yellow fig. Nice and crisp with very good acidity, lively. Fermented entirely in stainless steel.  (88 Points)

Sunny with a Chance of Flowers 2021 Rose ($17) Easy-drinking salmon-hued rose with on-trend nutritional labeling indicating "zero sugar," and 85 calories with only 9% alcohol. Yep, you can lower the calorie count significantly by cutting the alcohol content. Interesting peach, quince, and strawberry notes. Perfectly nice. (87 Points)

Scheid VDR Red Monterey ($20) Inky and "really jammy" according to my gal, who asked for a few ice cubes to dilute it. Draw your own conclusions, but I think this wine is somewhat manipulated and designed for a certain audience. (84 Points)

Scheid 2019 Metz Road Riverview Vineyard Pinot Noir Monterey, CA ($25) This pinot isn't going to blow your mind, but it's pretty good. Nice, elegant red fruit flavors that fit the cool Monterey site, it's not heavy on the tongue, not sweet, just very restrained and ok. An absolutely decent, varietally-correct wine.  (87 Points)
