Cameron Hughes Lambrusco |
California negociant Cameron Hughes has a great track record of blending good lots of American wine, but he's also dabbled in imports, and here we have a made in Italy Lambrusco that he just imports and bottles under his own label. Lambrusco, a light, fruity, frizzante red that's generally served chilled was fashionable with Italian Americans in the 1970's (Remember those "Chill a Cella" advertisements with Aldo? I do. I'm old). About ten years ago it started to trend again in NY, and certainly there was some ironic kitch involved, but some pretty decent examples emerged. This one is pretty typical at around 8.5% alcohol, just a little sweet, just a little fizzy, fruity, and just a bit reductive with a grape chewable vitamin note. If you're looking to shake things up a little this Thanksgiving, maybe consider this for a fun, light aperitif red. And just as I'm pulling a bulgogi-marinated steak off the grill, it occurs to me that Lambrusco would be amazing with Korean BBQ. A little campy? Sure, but it ain't bad! At $15, it's priced just about right. (85 Points).
