I recently received a shipment of some really nice under-$20 Sonoma County wines from stalwart Rodney Strong Vineyards in Russian River Valley, and I gotta say - they're really nice wines for the money. What I love about them is that they're really straightforward, drinkable, and they don't try too hard to be more than what they are.
The Rodney Strong 2019 Sonoma County Chardonnay has a sharp new label and has precise citrus, peach and pineapple flavors with good length. At a retail list price of $17, you can probably find it for $15 or less and it's REALLY good for a Chardonnay from anywhere in that price range.
The Rodney Strong 2017 Sonoma County Merlot is like-minded - fresh, red fruit-driven and has just a little bit of cinnamon spice from oak on the finish. It's just a pure, sunny, drinkable red that draws you back for more. At only $20, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better Merlot for the money.
The Rodney Strong 2017 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon has some black and red currant fruit, subtle herb notes and just a little bit of cocoa on the finish. The list price is $22, but you can probably find it a few dollars cheaper in a retail shop.
All three are highly recommended!
