Review: J. Lohr 2016 'Los Osos' Merlot Paso Robles, CA ($15)
Over the years, J. Lohr, one of the bigger growers in Paso Robles, has moved most of its Merlot plantings to cooler parts of the region. Here's a wine where you see the impact those decisions have made. I've always thought this wine was a really good value, and this vintage is true to that form. What it has in spades is freshness resulting from the relatively cool growing conditions. The nose is full of blueberries and violets with a bit of blackberry and spice. It's velvety in the mouth, just as Merlot should be, deep, and very flavorful - full of sunny California fruit. I see it selling online for as little as $12, and it's a steal at that price. Even for a few dollars more, it's an excellent value. (89 points)
